Canada ascending, U.S. plummets in economic freedom

Canada is ascending in a whole lot of ways. Canada is protecting free speech, standing up for their strong ally Israel, standing against tyranny and chaos on multiple fronts, against political correctness run amok, and now rising to the top five countries with the most economic freedom, according to a new Fraser Institute report — now leaps and bounds ahead of the United States thanks to the gradual shrinking of the Canadian government since the mid-1990s as America’s just got bigger. The U.S. has plummeted from position numero uno a decade ago down to lowly 18th (yeah eighteenth) position.

You should do it, definitely, I tell my leftist friends (yeah I still have some and a total of 2 relatives still scarily on the Left). See, they only spottily keep up with current events or rely on serious lefty leaning news sources and so are completely out of touch. To wit, despite some having been born way after the Vietnam War was even contemplated, they all seem to think Canada is some bastion of extreme lefty hippy dippy rainbow-making paradise and so make such claims as “If Obama is defeated, I’m moving to Canada!.” Eh, this sentiment would be more fitting for today’s Republicans if Obama were to win.

Sorry to say but Stephen Harper’s government makes Mitt Romney wearing a full metal jacket look hippy dippy and Harper has really only just gotten started. The success on all fronts means thankfully a conservative govt is not likely to be seriously challenged in Canada anytime soon.

Im with Lynne on this one. 18th huh? Just shows how socialist policies bankrupt every nation theyre enacted in. Then there is hope that this mess can be turned around. I was born after the Korean war,and my family came here in 1712 (thats the farthest back we can go thanks to the brits burning the War of 1812 and destroying census records)and want my children and grandchildren to live free and prosper.

And why would Iran need to lie if they were not planning nuclear bombs?!!!

The problem with Canada is that the government (and the governments of the various provences) limit political freedom. They have laws dealing with speech. You can be sued or even criminal charged for opinions that are not politically correct.

If I were to pay my own money for a billboard on private property in the United States that said “Homosexuality is a sin. You shouldn’t practice it” or “Islam is wrong. You should practice Christianity” there wouldn’t be (or shouldn’t be) any government action. But in Canada I could be charged with offence by various government organizations. Even biblical quotes can be and have been deemed an offense.

Canada has gone over to the European idea that to offend someone is the biggest sin there is. They believe there should be government control over what someone classifies as “Offensive Speech.”

Speech should only be controlled if it specifically advocates violence or sedition. Because once a government can control so called “Hate” or “Offensive” speech, it can classify anything it wants as hate or offensive.

    Limiting speech is dangerous!

Sadly, in an editorial today, the Los Angeles Times called for the same type of speech bans to be enacted in the United States.

Tiger Mike — you are exactly right. While Canada was held hostage by the ultra liberal party (before they voted them out) a variety of draconian PC anti-free-speech laws were passed and are still in effect. How draconian? Last year those agencies tried to ban the playing of the Dire Straits song “Money for Nothing” — you know, the incredibly popular (and incredibly good, love Dire Straits!) song from 1985 for the repeated use of an anti-gay slur — “that little faggot” — in its second verse. And, of course, they ignored the fact that the use of the slur in the song is to point out how stupid being anti-gay is but it shouldn’t have mattered. Thankfully there is a growing backlash against the PC laws and hopefully they will be over-turned.

      Limiting speech is incredibly dangerous.

And here again is where the left has changed so radically from the left I grew up with. Limitation of free speech was one of the main fears of folks on the Left that I knew but now the Left is getting in line for laws banning it and are engaging in exactly the same kind of thought suppression and media propaganda that they were so afraid that the Right was going to try to implement. Orwellian.

I must admit I am out of touch. I have never heard the song Money for Nothing. I have never heard of Dire Straits either.

  5. Lynne says :

Tiger Mike, I think that the song is from the middle 1980s.

Tiger — trust me, if you were alive in the 80s you’ve heard this song! You probably don’t remember it by name — check it out and rock out to some nostalgia:
