So prepare the jails and lock ’em up

Arab-Israeli MK Zoabi said this morning that Israel should “prepare the prisons” if a law requiring Arab Israelis to enlist in the army or perform national service is passed, stating that Arab youth would rather go to jail than perform some form of civil service or enlist in the IDF. Well, if that is the case, then they should go to jail. There should be no exceptions. If you are a citizen then you have an obligation to serve your country. If you are unwilling to serve your country then jail is one option or take a hike: give up your citizenship and go somewhere else.

If Arab-Israelis want equal rights (which they do have) then they need to pull an equal share of the burden. If they want equal respect, then they need to perform the types of service that lends respect to their fellow countrymen. If they want to be fully included in all aspects of social, political, and economic life, then they need to step up to the plate and participate in the activities that their other countrymen must engage in. So long as they remain unengaged, so long as they do not shoulder their share of the burden, so long as they do not serve their country, they will engender the resentment of the rest of their countrymen who do carry their share.

Well, I am not surprised at all. I could even say “I told you so!!” because I have spoken a lot of what I think of most Muslim Arab Israelis!
I set aside the Christian Arab Israelis even though many famous examples should indicate that many of them have espoused the most extreme Muslim goals but it might be due to the fact that many live among Muslim Arabs!!

These Arab Israelis are very committed to cashing in their unemployment cheques wen needed but when it relates to doing a compulsory military service in Israel (that could also apply to them), they are nowhere to be found!!

By the way, compulsory military service is done in many countries and it is done irrespective of one’s religious affiliation!!
For instance, in France, Jews have to go and do their military service during one year like anybody else of any religion!!! Muslims in France are also forced to do their military service in France when they are French citizens!! Not doing it leads to serious consequences!!

I think Muslim Arabs in Israel should do military service as long as anybody else but maybe not linked to military tasks because it poses security issues. Paving the roads, building sewers, you name it, there are many tasks they could be asked to do during their military service!

Finally, religious Jews should also be forced to do their military service, even Yeshivah students, or especially those who dodge the military service for completely bogus religious reasons!!

King David did not have any qualms taking arms to defend the Land of Israel, not did his son King Salomon!!
If David and Salomon did their “military service” more than what is currently asked for Israelis, I assume that any Hareidi or ultra-Orthodox should have no hesitation doing theirs too!!

This situation in Israel where a part of the population is shielded from giving their lives for the State of Israel in case of a war (the religious) and others are not is completely immoral, unethical and unfair. Israel must act ASAP to stop this injustice.

There are, of course, Arab-Israelis who serve proudly and heroically in the military, and others who do community service. They have options to serve their country. They can do valuable work within their own communities, benefiting their communities, and I feel that they should do that if they do not want to serve in the military. Perhaps they should move to Gaza or Ramallah or leave to live in wonderful Syria or Turkey…. Jordan would surely not allow them to immigrate to Jordan. Israel is a small country and needs the cooperation of all citizens to make the country successful.

Of course the thing I find interesting is that the Arab parties could have some clout if they actually decided to participate in the Israel political system. If you include Hadash, they hold 11 seats in the Knesset, which is the same as Shas. I guess they would rather pretend ISrael is going away.

    • Lynne says :

Mike, they do not know their own interests. If they lived in a different country, they would not have the safety, security, opportunities that they have in Israel. They could leave, so why don’t they? I mean only those who hate Israel.
