just stuff

I was really pleased to learn that one of the kids I tutored in Stats earned an 82 on the final exam. I essentially had to teach an entire semester course in just 5 days and including how to calculate z scores, one sample z tests, all the t-tests and Anova by hand, with all the steps of hypothesis testing that go along with it, along with all the theory. Said kid had been missing in action entirely during the first half of the semester due to illness and so had simply zoned out the second half –stats is like building blocks and if you miss the basics you will be clueless when it comes to the more advanced stuff. I was literally starting out explaining what a mean, median and mode are and that the kiddo managed to score above average on the exam made me a very happy camper.

I’m currently tutoring kids in basic stats, advanced stats (let’s hear it for multiple regression and SEM modeling!), Intro to Social Psych, Developmental, Cognitive Psych, Biology (for psychology), Personality, and Research Methods. I tutored last night from 5:30 until 9, something I don’t usually do on Shabbat, but the lure of 300 sheks drew me to the dark side. I’ve spent most of today preparing materials for tutoring tomorrow and Monday and starting to put together materials for a couple of workshops I plan to hold teaching basic and advanced html and java for website design.

I’m worried about Little Mouse. He’s been throwing up a lot in the last 3 days. I’m going to take him to the country’s leading dental specialist and see if there is any possibility we can get his teeth removed — if there is any possibility we can anesthetize him enough, without actually putting him under, to get those teeth out. The shots are proving less and less effective, I’m afraid he may be developing diabetes from them, and I can’t get the added protection antibiotic pills down him.

I’m about to head out into the garden now to start some more okra seeds and feed the two baby cats and the black abandoned kitty, who I hear crying under the window. I think I am also going to harvest the eggplant and have a roasted aubergine sandwich for dinner tonight 🙂

I hope that the dentist can provide some solution for Little Mouse. Poor little thing! He has been through so much.
Glad to hear about your tutoring success and the fact that it is greatly benefiting your students.

you only charge 300 shekels for 3.5 hours of tutoring? No wonder you are struggling financially! A hi-school teacher tutoring English charges 150-180 shekels an hour easily, and i would assume that you should be able to charge at least that much, no?

In the US, a basic tutor charges $40- $70 per hour, depending on the subject. Math, chemistry and statistics tutoring costs more.
Consider raising your rates a bit.

I just converted shekels to dollars, and your rate is generous but not so bad. My friend who tutors full time here charges an average of $45/hr. but less for each additional hour giving a better rate for more hours. Her rate may not be far from yours overall for multiple hours.

In the summer, I offer reduced rates because not that many folks are seeking tutors. I also reduce rates for students who need more than 3 hours of tutoring a week and I’m working with this particular student 6-8 hours a week[. My regular rates are 175 for statistics and 150 for everything else.
