Jews around the world take greater care than usual

Al Qaeda and their many terrorist-friend groups (Hezbollah, etc) have vowed to target Jews worldwide in the next few weeks as the High Holidays approach. They can’t hit Israel but they can hit targets outside of Israel. Security has been stepped up in all Israeli consulates worldwide and warnings given to Israelis traveling abroad. The threat is not just against Israelis, however, but all Jews. The Israeli government’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau warned of potential attacks against Jews in strikingly strident tones on Monday, listing dozens of countries where it said it had “concrete” indications of a terrorist threat.

The travel warning suggest strongly that Israelis and non-Israeli Jews refrain from traveling to Sudan, Somalia, Algeria, Djibouti, Mauritania, Libya and Tunisia, and to leave these countries immediately if they were there, because of a similarly “very high” terror threat. Where Tunisia was concerned, it underlined what it said were the “threats to carry out attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets.”

You should also “avoid visiting” the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt and Qatar, where it cited what it called a “basic” terrorist threat. Avoid visits to Turkey, Oman and Morocco, because of “ongoing potential threats.”

Slightly further afield, it cited “very high” terror threats in Afghanistan, parts of southern Thailand, parts of the southern Philippines, east Senegal, India’s Kashmir province, northern Nigeria, parts of Kenya, and Chechnya. Israelis were not to travel to any of those areas, and to leave immediately if they were there, it ordered.

The advisory also specified a “high” terror threat in Indonesia, Burkina-Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo, Mali, Malaysia and Pakistan, telling Israelis not to go there and urging them to leave as soon as possible if they were there now.

The bureau’s warning also specified concerns about terror threats to Israeli “business targets” worldwide, and especially in Africa, “in the wake of the exposure of a terrorist infrastructure in Nigeria over the past year.”

If you happen to be American or European etc of any religion or non-religion you might also want to avoid those places as, while the threats specifically focused on Jews, they also mention “Western” targets. Sept 11 is approaching…

I was considering purchasing a private island in Belize. You can get one for between US$90k (for a simple undeveloped 3 acre key) to about US$300k (for something larger and developed with a modest home and electricity). You can also purchase a parcel on a developed island for around $60k.

The older I get… the more this sounds attractive. News stories like this… and evil people in general… just make me want to live on an island for the rest of my life.

You can buy an entire island for 90k?! I take it the island doesn’t have vital things to life like fresh water…? What do you do in the event of a hurricane or tsunami? If I could buy an island with water and no threat of hurricane or tsunami, well sign me and the cats up on the boat to get me there…

I’m certain the undeveloped island would need some sort of desalination device for it to be habitable 24/7. And, of course, electricity would need to be run. And a house built. One could always invest more money into a parcel with a home that’s already connected to infrastructure.

I don’t think it’s realistic to think a Caribbean island is without risks like hurricanes and tsunamis. But, people do live in places like and thrive peacefully. Plus, most of the islands for sale are within 20-45 minute boat rides from the mainland if evacuation is required.

All that said, the threat of a storm maybe once a year somehow seems to outweigh the inevitable daily experience of stupid people.

Yo, you just caused me to laugh up a valued quantity of my daily diet coke quota! But seriously, I’m with you on that.
