well the situation in the South of Israel is exploding

Update: Well the Germans are in shock (see Bild report) after their cruise ship off the coast of Ashdod came under Hamas rocket attack.

I’ve just gotten home from meetings (I know 11 pm! argh) I held since 4 and checked the news.  Dude.  Yes, it is our every two years summer rocket fest extravaganza and I’m not talking fireworks.  I was pretty ticked off to read that several thousand chickens were killed today by a rocket fired by Hamas terrorists from Gaza.  That was one of the more than 30 rockets fired at us by terrorists today within just 10 MINUTES.

80 rockets fired at us since this morning.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the heavy rocket fire, as Code Red sirens blared across the south, in towns and cities including Ashkelon, Kiryat Malachi, Ashdod, Netivot, and Beersheba. The Iron Dome missile defense system shot down a total of 12 rockets over Netivot and Ashdod.

Residents of towns in southern Israel close to the Gaza strip have been warned to stay 15 seconds from bomb shelters at all times.

Another rocket just hit outside Sderot a minute ago.

And here we go, the height of hilarity, Abbas demanded tonight that Israel stop retaliating for attacks from Gaza.

I met with a friend today from Beit Hanin and she said things are just crazy there.  She was like ‘half the Arabs I meet think I’m Jewish and half the Jews I meet think I’m an Arab (she’s an Arab Christian) and so I’m afraid of everyone on the streets there.”

On the other hand, we have to look on the bright side.  We could be living in a real war zone like Chicago — did you know 82 people were shot just over the 4th of July weekend there, 14 of them fatally?

I told my Ema that the first thing I am getting when I arrive in the States, even before a car, is a gun.  The second thing is a dog — a growly fierce sounding one.  Cats are great but not such good murderer deterrents.  I’ll be relieved when I am able to return home where we ‘only’ have to deal with rockets and terrorists because at least you know who the people who are likely to try killing you are and it isn’t the person in the house or apartment next door.

Yes, I read about the situation in Chicago. It is almost as bad in many other northern, big cities—the sites of manufacturing that has moved away to other countries. It’s quite scary in those places, but it pays to take care even in small towns. I grew up in a small town in Arkansas, and even as a kid I found the murders there and the other types of crime (especially peeping toms) very scary. We were small but not immune to violence. Violent crime is a huge problem in the US.
Apparently, Hamas has weapons/rockets that can now reach Central Israel, and in Arutz Sheva and YNET there were concerns expressed for many areas of Israel including Tel Aviv.
I was reading articles about Muhammed Abu Khader’s killers, and it was stated that they are remanded to be in custody for additional days. Does this mean that they could be released at some point???? These criminals should not be on the street, free to harm others. Even before this vile act at least three of them had previous criminal activity. Considering the violence and pure evil of their crime, they should not be released at atl!!! To let them out would be insanity, madness. After what they did (three have already confessed), to allow them freedom even for a day is totally unacceptable.

Ema, of course Hamas does. You can blame Bush but especially Obama for that. Two years ago their rockets hit not very far from where I live.

Re remanding. No, it means they can be held for more days without all the potential charges being brought against them as police gather evidence to press more charges and continue to interrogate them. They can’t have a bail hearing or anything else until the remanded days have passed. The charges are already serious enough that they wouldn’t be granted bail at any rate but it gives the police more leeway for a longer time with interrogation.

Ah. Relieved to know that they won’t be out while awaiting trial.
Be as safe as you can as you travel around.

      Hey Yaeli:

I can’t get the German link to load and I don’t read/speak German anyway. What happened and how are the German’s reacting. Stay safe, stay strong.

Yael, we should talk about guns. I have a tremendous amount of experience in training and use of firearms for self defense.

Tiger Mike, living in New Orleans for so many years gave me a healthy respect for having a gun and knowing how to use it for self-defense. Guns were everywhere in New Orleans, mostly in the hands of the criminals though, not ordinary citizens. Crime was rampant. I became convinced of the value of having a gun when young woman used her gun to protect herself when being shot at as she was trying to open the door to her house. She had recently bought a gun and was coming back from her second or third gun training class when this happened. She fired back and saved her life. I’d be grateful for any advice you could give Yaeli about what gun to buy. Having defense is just plain good sense.
